General information

January 30 and 31: reserved for veterinarians - February 1 and 2: open for trainers/keepers

Thursday, Friday and Saturday sessions will be held in the Cinema of Nausicaa, entrance in the main lobby. Sunday: The hands-on sessions will be held at the sea lion department with restricted number of participants (20 per sessions) and will be transmitted live at the Cinema. Language of the workshop will be English.

Wednesday January 29^th 2003

Organized shuttles between Calais train/ferry stations/Boulogne train station and the hotel IBIS during the day.

08.00 - 09.00: Welcome and registration at Nausicaa
08.30: Shuttle between Hotel IBIS and Nausicaa
09.00 - 11.00: Welcome by Ph. Vallette, director of Nausicaa and J.L. Bourgain, curator of marine mammals and Dr. G. Lacave, organizer of the medical workshop.; 1^st session - Diseases in stranded pinniped:; Etiology - epidemiology - pathology
11.00 - 11.30: Coffee Break
11.30 - 13.00: 2^nd session - Diseases in stranded and captive pinnipeds:; Etiology - epidemiology - pathology; includes a review of the PDV epizootic.
13.00 - 14.30: Lunch (at Nausicaa) - included in registration fee
14.30 - 16.00: 3^rd session - Diseases in stranded pinnipeds; First Aid in stranded animals; Diagnosis and treatments
16.00 - 16.30: Coffee Break
16.30 - 18.30: 4^th session - Diseases in stranded and captive pinnipeds :; Diagnosis and treatments
19:00: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS
20:00: Shuttle to Restaurant - included in registration fee
22.30 - 23:00: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS

10.30 - 11.00: Coffee Break
11.00 - 12.30: 2^nd session - Diseases and treatments in stranded and captive pinnipeds:; Surgery
12.30 - 14.00: Lunch (at Nausicaa) - included in registration fee
14.00 - 15.30: 3^rd session - Basic principles of zoo animals dentistry and dental treatment in pinnipeds
15.30 - 16.00: Coffee Break
16.00 - 17.30: 4^th session - Pinniped ophthalmology
17.30 - 18.30: 5^th session - Case presentations/Conundrum
18.30: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS; Welcome and registration at Hotel IBIS for trainers
19.30 - 20.30: "Grand public" evening + discussion at Nausicaa cinema; Tentative subject: oil spill effect on marine mammals
20.30: Shuttle from hotel IBIS to Nausicaa
21.00: Walking dinner "Cheese and Wine" at Nausicaa; Free evening visit of the Aquarium; (included for all in registration fee)
23.00-23.30: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS

09.00 - 11.00: New welcome by Mr. Ph. Vallette, director of Nausicaa and J.L. Bourgain, curator of marine mammals and Dr. G. Lacave, organizer .; 1^st session - Handling and restraint in wild animals; Human wounds and treatments; Introduction to the advantages of medical training in captive animals
11.00 - 11.30: Coffee Break
11.30 - 13.00: 2^nd session - Medical training in captive animals
13.00 - 13.30: Sea lion educational presentation
13.30 - 14.30: Lunch (at Nausicaa) - included in registration fee
14.30 - 16.00: 3^rd session - Medical training in captive animals
16.00 - 16.30: Coffee Break
16.30 - 18.30: 4^th session - Medical training in captive animals
19:00: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS
20:00 - ?: Restaurant "Les gens de la mer" - Banquet - Party - included in registration fee (100 m from the hotel)

Sunday February 2^nd 2003

08.30: Shuttle between Hotel IBIS and Nausicaa
09.00: Determination of the groups for the hands-on sessions (more or less 20 persons per group) - departure of first group to the sea lion department. Rest of the group goes to the Cinema. All sessions will be transmitted live and commented in the Cinema.
09.30 - 10.30: 1^st hands-on session at the sea lion department:; Body - eye and teeth check-up
10.30 - 11.00: Coffee break
11.00 - 12.00: 2^nd hands-on session at the sea lion department:; Squeeze cage desensitization
12.30 - 14.00: Lunch at Nausicaa - included in registration fee
14.00 - 15.00: 3^rd hands-on session at the sea lion department:; Voluntary blood draws
15.30 - 16.30: 4^th hands-on session at the sea lion department:; Use of diagnostic tools: Ultrasound/X-rays ...
16.30 - 17.00: Coffee break
17.00 - 18.00: 5^th hands-on session at the sea lion department:; General session - review of some specific desensitization - participants choices
18.30: End of the workshop
19:00: Shuttle back to hotel IBIS
20:00: Departure to the Restaurant - included in registration fee

Tentatively: organized dinner for the participants still present the Sunday evening.
